Sharing of network interoperability experience between Yancheng Japan Cloud Server and Alibaba Cloud and AWS

1. Essence 1: The key to quickly achieving stable interconnection is to choose the appropriate direct connection or BGP solution and implement traffic policy diversion at the local egress.

2. Essence 2: To ensure performance and security, you must combine VPN redundancy, traffic encryption and multi-path load balancing, and strictly implement ACL and monitoring.

3. Essence 3: Common problems in actual combat arise from MTU, routing conflicts and cross-domain DNS. It is extremely important to verify and establish automated failover in advance.

When the Japan Cloud Server deployed in Yancheng needed to connect to the domestic Alibaba Cloud and the international AWS, we made bold innovations from the three levels of architecture, network, and operation and maintenance: using local SD-WAN + The hybrid mode of direct connection from cloud vendors not only retains the high bandwidth and low latency of direct connection, but also achieves cross-region redundancy through VPN.

The first step is network assessment: We conducted multi-point measurements on the links from the domestic export and Japanese computer rooms to Alibaba Cloud and AWS, recorded the bandwidth, packet loss and RTT curves, and clarified the hop points that must be optimized. The measurement results determine whether to use BGP multiple advertisements or just a single direct connection with an encrypted tunnel.

In terms of routing strategy, we use layered advertising and policy routing: services with high real-time requirements (such as voice and financial API) take the shortest path through Alibaba Cloud Direct Connection, and for batch synchronization or backup, go to AWS

Safety is something that cannot be compromised. IPSec or TLS tunnels are enabled on all cross-cloud links, and two-factor access and least privilege policies are enabled on key nodes. At the same time, we deploy traffic mirroring and intrusion detection at the link exit, and combine the WAF and security groups in the cloud to achieve multi-layer protection.

In terms of performance optimization: adjust the MTU to an appropriate value to avoid fragmentation, enable TCP BBR or congestion control to optimize long-link transmission, and implement retry and idempotent designs at the application layer to reduce the amplification effect of cross-cloud requests. In terms of monitoring, it integrates multi-cloud CloudWatch and Alibaba Cloud monitoring data, and uses Prometheus for unified alarms.

Fault drills are the core of experience: we regularly conduct link switching, direct connection failure simulations, and route leak drills to verify whether the automated script can switch to the backup channel within seconds. In actual combat, it was found that automated recovery is several times faster than manual response and can greatly reduce RTO.

Cross-cloud DNS and consistency is another pain point. We adopt a distributed DNS + master-slave synchronization strategy to perform health checks and weighted routing of business domain names on different clouds to avoid single point dependence. At the same time, private zones are used for intranet name resolution to speed up resolution.

In terms of cost control, using a mixture of direct connection and on-demand VPN, and compressing and caching long link traffic can significantly reduce forwarding costs. For large batches of synchronization tasks, choose an off-peak window and use cheaper links to save costs without affecting peak business experience.
